Welcome to the Spruce Street School PTA
What we do
Spruce Street School is a New York City Public School, which means it is funded by the Department of Education (DoE). Unfortunately, DoE funds do not cover all the expenses that the school needs to be such an amazing learning community. And that's where the PTA jumps in.
How To Get Involved:
All parents (or legally appointed guardians or persons in parental relation) to students currently attending Spruce Street School, and all Spruce Street School teachers are automatically members of the Spruce Street School PTA. No membership form is necessary.
So just jump in and help. Volunteer your time. Come to meetings. Give your thoughts. Ask questions. Donate what you can. The Spruce Street PTA makes wonderful investments in our children and our community, but we only can do that if we do it together.
We hold a monthly meeting (General PTA Meeting - see schedule) where all are invited. We usually have a report from the school Principal, a financial update on the PTA and updates on all issues concerning the school and activities organized by the PTA. It's a great place to start.
Volunteers are the life and blood of the PTA. Organized around a Committee Chair that sits on the Executive Board, volunteers set up events, decorate, sell tickets, find sponsors, deliver friendly messages, design merchandise, maintain website & social networks, chaperone parties, hold yoga sculpt sessions (true story), walk around art galleries (also true), print flyers, drink coffee, take pictures, invent spooky stories, and most of all have fun and meet other families from our community. Sounds fun? It is. Reach out, there's always room for more.
Board elections are held in May, with a nominating committee working in April to put together a balanced team. If you are interested, reach out at any point during the year. In some cases positions may be available before the yearly election, through Special Expedited Elections. The PTA is governed by the Spruce PTA bylaws, written and regularly updated by the Executive Board, according to the Department of Education of the City of New York. EB members are volunteer parents elected to perform the roles needed to run the PTA, a Delaware 501(c)3 Nonprofit, for one fiscal year (July 1st - June 30th).

- Professional development for teachers? That’s on us.
- Librarian and library equipment? Yup, that’s us.
- Student enrichment such as chess and dance? You guessed it.
- What about recess staff, lice checks, IT support, and all sorts of supplies? Still the PTA.
- Events for teachers? Workshops for parents? Same again.
- Financial support for families in need? We fund it through the school Parent Coordinator.
