Spruce Street School engages with community organizations in line with our mission that each student leaves our school prepared to give back to the world. We focus on ongoing partnerships with local organizations to maximize impact relevant to our students every day lives.
We are partnered with: Helpsy Through our partnership with Helpsy, parents and children can drop off clothing of all kinds for donation and be sure they will receive a second life. 85% of clothing ends its life in a landfill, an avoidable fate. Via Helpsy, donated new and lightly used clothing will make its way to organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters chapters, or the American Veteran Association, while beyond-repair items will be sent to organizations such as FabScrap and Textile Recovery for fabric recycling. Helpsy donations can be made every day that school is open. Parents should reach out to their Grade Reps with specific donation questions.
Little Essentials Little Essentials is a non-profit organization supporting at-risk NYC families living in poverty with donations of urgent essential needs. Spruce Street supports Little Essentials via their ongoing online Essentials Drive, and hosts one in-person gear drive to allow parents the opportunity to donate their gently-worn unneeded essentials such as strollers, car seats, diapers, pack-n-plays and other urgently needed items. For more information on how to help, parents should reach out to their Grade Reps.
One Love Community Fridge One Love Community is a network of 25+ free fridges in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn working to close the gap on food insecurity with high-quality nutritious food available for free and without stigma to anyone who needs it. Spruce Street holds an annual food drive each year to benefit the community that depends on these fridges. Parents and children can bring a huge variety of foods (no meat, no dairy) to school during this drive. This year, the drive will be on Monday, February 6th. For questions about dates or what types of food to bring, parents should reach out to their Grade Reps.
Project Cicero Spruce Street participates in Project Cicero, a new and gently-used book drive program benefiting public schools in New York City. Many NYC public schools do not have enough resources to ensure that there is a wide variety of high quality literature available for their students. Projet Cicero ensures that all Title I schools are given the opportunity to personally select as many donated books as they can transport to their students each year. Spruce Street participates in Project Cicero annually, and parents interested in donating should reach out to their Grade Reps or to Kim Mulvey for more information.
The Spruce Shares Initiative The Spruce Share Closet is a supply closet that keeps necessities for members of our student body, families and teachers to access essential items throughout the year should the need arise - we get it stocked regularly through the school's Parent Coordinator, who is also in charge of any other confidential financial support initiative. The Spruce Shares fund also helps students/families to participate to school events if they can't pay the participation fees. If you would like to contribute to Spruce Shares, you may do so by donating to our Spruce Fund.
Please contact Parent Coordinator Kim Mulvey [email protected]212-266-4800 x 2492, or Guidance Counselor Kayesha Hines khines@sprucestreetnyc.org212-266-4800 x 2493, or your classroom teacher if you would like to receive items from the closet or any other support.
