About One Love Community Fridge
One Love Community Fridge is a volunteer network supporting more than 20 community fridges in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. You can find a Google map of the fridges we support here. You can read more about the roots of NYC's community fridge movement here.
We partner with organizations, restaurants, and food pantries to make fresh, nutritious food available at no cost and with no stigma through all of these fridge locations, which are available 24/7 to anyone who needs them. We also hold distribution events targeted to certain needs (immunity boosts, warm weather essentials) within certain communities.
Nearly 13 percent of NYC lives in food insecurity, disproportionately impacting communities of color and families with children.
Collecting donations:
Bring your food on Monday, February 6th, 2023 (or send it in with your child). At the end of the school day, volunteers from One Love Community Fridge and from the Spruce Street School PTA will collect and distribute the donations. Reach out if you'd like to help!
What to donate:
Our rule for donations is simply not to donate anything you would not feed your own family. Fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, breads, etc are all welcome! There are often food photos on Instagram, if that is helpful to get a sense of the donations! And yes, this DOES include fresh food too.
Why:
All families deserve access to healthy, nourishing food, especially in the middle of pandemic topped with economic insecurity. As New Yorkers, we always support our neighbors in times of need. That is the magic of this city and the great privilege of raising our beloved children here.
Why at Spruce:
One of our fourth graders is a volunteer at One Love Community Fridge and started this as a food drive in her class last year. The PTA board decided to pick it up and extend it to the whole school, because it's such an amazing initiative!
